A Clinical Study on Malignant Cutaneous Tumors

Abstract
A clinical study was done on 77 patients with total number of 78 malignant tumors of the skin encountered in the Department of Dermatology, Busan National University Hospital during the last ten-year period from January 1966 to December 1975.
The results obtained were summarized as follows;
1) There were 43 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 26 cases of basal cell carcinoma, 4 cases of Paget¢¥s disease including one case of extramammary Paget¢¥s dame, and one case of basal squamous carcinoma, malignant melanoma, neurofibrosarcoma, angiosarcoma and carcinoma of sebaceous gland, respectively.
2) Of 77 patients, 43 were male and 34 were female with ratio of 1. 2:1. However, there was a much higher male risk for squamous cell carcinoma with ratio of 2.9:1, while basal cell carcinoma were more in the female with ratio of 1.8:1.
3) Age incidence ranged from 15 years to 86 years with the highest incidence rate in the age group 60-69 years and incidence rate increased remarkably in number after over 40 years of age.
4). Average age of malignant cutaneous tumors was 55. 7 years and in both squamous cell and basal cellcarcinoma, average age of male was much higher than that of female, especially in basal cell carci noma appearing 64.4 years in male and 51.7 years in female.
5) The ratio of squamous to basal cell carcinoma in this series was 1.6 to 1, while high incidence of basal to squamous cell carcinoma among Caucasians.
6) About 91. 0% of all cases of both squamous and basal cell carcinoma occurred on the exposed areas and the most common sites were nose and orbital regions for basal cell carcinoma, in which 21 of all 26 cases developed.
7) An excessive male risk of squamous cell carcinoma was observed for the lower lip than any other major predilection sites; that is, all the 11 cases of squamous cell carcinoma developed in lips were on the lower lip of the male.
8) Nodulo-ulcerative lesions were seen in most cases of squamous cell carcinoma and 14 of 26 cases of basal cell carcinoma showed typical lesions with pearly rolled borders and 5 cases showed dark pigmented lesions suggestive of pigmented basal cell carcinoma.
9) Analysis by TNM caacsification revealed that among the total 69 cases of squamous and basal cell carcinoma, T, were 30 cases, T, 28, T, 10 and T, 1; there were 7 cases of N, and one case of M, in squamous cell carcinomas, and all cases of basal cell carcinomas were N, and M,.
10) Among 9 cases of premalignant lesions were 3 cases of xeroderma pigmentosum including one which developed both squamous and basal cell carcinoma, 2 cases of senile keratoses and each one case of arsenical keratosis, bum scar, chronic ulcer and multiple neurofibromatosis.
